#WEOUTSIDE is an outdoor program from the Maine Association of New Americans (MANA), an immigrant-led nonprofit in Portland. The program also introduces participants to job opportunities in Maine's outdoor industry, and it connects to MANA's peer support and wellness work.

7 Lakes Alliance conserves the lands and waters of the Belgrade Lakes region in central Maine. The group formed in 2017 through the merger of the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance and the Maine Lakes Resource Center. It cares for the Kennebec Highlands and keeps seven public trails open for hiking, and it protects water quality through courtesy boat inspections, erosion control, and the LakeSmart program. A summer conservation crew hires local high school students to do the field work. The alliance also offers guided walks, lake science, and year-round events, and partners with Colby College on research.

Acadia Institute of Oceanography

Camp

Acadia Institute of Oceanography is an overnight marine science camp in Seal Harbor, on Mount Desert Island. It has taught oceanography to young people since 1975 and serves students ages 10 to 19 in one- and two-week sessions. Campers study the ocean through hands-on field work, exploring tide pools, taking boat trips, dredging for sea life, profiling beaches, and watching whales and seabirds. Older students can earn college credit through the University of Maine. Room and board are included, and some students qualify for local scholarships.

Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing & Adventure Camps

Acadia National Park protects the highest rocky headlands on the U.S. Atlantic coastline. It draws about 4 million visits a year, making it one of the top ten most-visited national parks. Visitors can hike 158 miles of trails, bike 45 miles of carriage roads, and drive 27 miles of historic motor roads. Sea cliffs offer climbing, though permits are required for some activities. Campgrounds must be reserved online in advance; there is no backcountry camping or overnight parking. The fare-free Island Explorer bus helps ease summer traffic. An entrance pass is required year-round, and vehicle reservations are needed for Cadillac Summit Road from late May to mid-October. The park honors the heritage and continuing presence of the Wabanaki, People of the Dawnland. It is committed to accessibility for visitors of all abilities, and off-season visits from November through April are rewarding.

Acadia Youth Conservation Corps (AYCC)

Acadia Youth Conservation Corps is a summer employment program supported by Friends of Acadia, working in partnership with Acadia National Park. It hires high school students, recently ages 15 to 18, for eight weeks of conservation work across the park. The program was reimagined after a pandemic hiatus, adding dedicated National Park Service coordinator and crew leader positions. Crews rotate through several park divisions. Their work includes rebuilding bogwalks and erosion checks on historic trails, painting carriage road gates, and pulling invasive glossy buckthorn. They also replant revegetation sites, clear creek beds at the Wild Gardens of Acadia, collect visitor-use data on carriage roads, and help Summit Stewards with visitor engagement. The program is part of Friends of Acadia's Tomorrow's Stewards youth development work, alongside the Acadia Digital Media Team and Recreation Technicians.

Acadian Pond Hockey Classic

Event

The Acadian Pond Hockey Classic is the St. John Valley's premier 3-on-3 pond hockey tournament. It has been played each February on the frozen expanse of Long Lake in St. Agatha since 2019, drawing teams and hockey fans from both sides of the U.S.-Canada border. 17 teams competed in the 7th annual event in February 2026, and the event even added a Zamboni in 2024. More than a tournament, it is a cross-border fundraiser: proceeds benefit minor hockey programs throughout the greater St. John Valley on both sides of the border, with about $27,500 donated to date. Live music and family-friendly activities round out the weekend on the ice.

Adaptive Outdoor Education Center

The Adaptive Outdoor Education Center is a nonprofit whose mission is to improve quality of life for people with disabilities through adaptive recreation and education. It runs year-round programs statewide from three locations: the Carrabassett Valley lodge, which opened in December 2015 beside the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, Brunswick's Horizons Center, and a location in Dedham. Programs include adaptive alpine skiing, climbing, sailing, waterskiing, golf, and camps and youth programs. There are also community offerings like Sibshops for siblings, caregiver programs, a Social Circle, music, the Wheel Together Retreat, and Brunswick's nature program series and Dino Park. The Adaptive Gear Library and Adaptive Mobility Initiative in Brunswick lend out specialized equipment. The fully accessible Carrabassett lodge sleeps up to 25 people, with a wheelchair-accessible kitchen and baths and low-sensory gathering spaces. It is available for individual and group reservations. The center is a Move United member marking a decade of belonging, and it was featured in the Maine Sports Commission's Sideline Stories in June 2026 by Director Kayla Lee.

Allagash Wilderness Waterway

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a 92-mile ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams through the heart of northern Maine's commercial forests. It is widely considered one of America's finest canoe trips. The Maine Legislature established the waterway in 1966, and in 1970 it became the first state-administered component of the National Wild and Scenic River System. The Bureau of Parks and Lands, part of Maine DACF, manages it today. Highlights include the class II Chase Rapids below Churchill Dam and remote campsites reached only by water or private logging roads. The waterway holds deep Native American and logging-era heritage; Henry David Thoreau paddled here in 1857, guided by Penobscot tribal members Joseph Aitteon and Joe Polis. An annual artist residency program also calls the waterway home. Camping fees apply, and trip planning requires care since cell coverage is spotty and launch sites are remote. Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as the Friends of the Allagash. It works closely with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands to strengthen the wilderness character of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. It also works to protect its environment and preserve its natural, historic, and cultural values. Its programs include Youth on the Allagash, which aims to bring every 8th grader in the St. John Valley onto the river. In June 2026, 34 students launched a historic trip. Other programs include the science-driven Natural Resources Inventory & Monitoring, which tracks coldwater fishery habitat temperature, and the Storied Lands & Waters historical and cultural assessment. Alpine Operations Certificate (UMF)

The Alpine Operations Certificate at the University of Maine at Farmington is an 18-credit program for people who want to turn a love of skiing or snowboarding into a career. It is open to UMF students in any major, as well as community members and part-time learners. Students learn on the snow at Titcomb Mountain, about seven minutes from campus, where they help run the UMF Snowcats children's learn-to-ski program and teach peers and community members. Coursework covers ski and snowboard instruction for kids and adults along with snow sports theory. The program prepares students to earn Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) Level 1 certification and connects them with people working at Maine's major ski areas.

The Bay of Fundy International Marathon is one of the most distinctive marathons in North America. It is one of only three marathons that cross the U.S.-Canada border. The course starts at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, the easternmost point in the United States. It is certified by USATF and Athletics Canada, and it is a Boston qualifier. Runners cross the FDR Memorial Bridge over Lubec Narrows into Roosevelt Campobello International Park, passing the president's summer home along miles of water and harbor views. The race weekend happens each June in Lubec (the 2026 race is Sunday, June 21). The weekend also includes a half marathon and a 10K that run from the lighthouse into the heart of Lubec. International runners need a passport for the border-crossing courses.

Beach to Beacon 10K is Maine's largest road race, drawing almost 6,500 runners each August along the Cape Elizabeth coastline. The course runs from Crescent Beach to the Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park. Cape Elizabeth's own Olympic marathon champion, Joan Benoit Samuelson, founded the race.

Cobscook Institute is a 501(c)(3) community learning center on Cobscook Bay in Washington County. It was formerly known as Cobscook Community Learning Center, or CCLC. The institute creates educational opportunities that strengthen personal, community, and global well-being. Year-round offerings include community classes and events, summer camps, a pottery studio, movement programs, the Iota Short Forms writing program, and the Downeast Birding Festivals. It also runs Cobscook Experiential Programs, an accredited public high school experience for Washington County students, and TREE (Transforming Rural Experience in Education). The campus includes the Cobscook Retreat Center and Heartwood Lodge for multi-day classes, conferences, and retreats. An Access Fund offers sliding-scale pricing so cost is not a barrier, and the institute keeps a dedicated focus on Indigenous teaching and learning.

Member camps get professional events, resources, legislative and regulatory advocacy, and Indigenous Peoples understanding resources. Maine Teen Camp

Maine Teen Camp is a coed overnight summer camp in Porter, created just for teenagers ages 13 to 17. It was established in 1984, is family owned and operated, and offers more than 35 elective activities on a campus bordered by two lakes. Outdoor offerings include swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing, plus out-of-camp trips for hiking, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting. The camp awards more than 70,000 dollars each year in camperships and scholarships, including partnerships that bring low-income and underserved youth to camp.

Maine the Way is an independent guide to Maine, rooted in place and community. The Maine Tourism Association is a private membership association for Maine's tourism and hospitality industry, separate from the state's Maine Office of Tourism. It also staffs the Maine State Visitor Information Centers that welcome travelers at the state's gateways. Maine Windjammer Association

Association

The Maine Windjammer Association represents the largest fleet of traditional tall ships in the Americas: nine historic schooners sailing out of Rockland and Camden. The fleet includes American Eagle, Angelique, Grace Bailey, Heritage, J. & E. Riggin, Ladona, Lewis R. French, Mary Day, and Stephen Taber. They offer multi-day, all-inclusive sailing vacations on Penobscot Bay, one of the most acclaimed cruising grounds in the world. Each ship carries just 16 to 31 guests, and itineraries change with the wind.

Maine Woodland Owners is a statewide membership organization for Maine's roughly 86,000 family woodland owners. It supports members with forestry education, woodlot tours, field days, workshops such as chainsaw training, and its Maine Woodlands publication. The organization advocates on forest policy and helps owners understand programs like the Tree Growth Tax Law. It also runs an accredited land trust that holds conserved property across ten regional divisions and offers a land donation program and a Woodland Steward Program. Maine's Outdoor Learning Center

Maine's Outdoor Learning Center is a Registered Maine Guide school that has trained successful Maine Guides since 1997. It offers 3-, 4-, and 6-day guide schools, a week-long field training on the Mattawamkeag River, Tidewater and Specialized Sea-Kayaking guide schools, Maine Guide first aid, and private classes. In 2026, sessions run in Camden, Gray, and other locations, with a typical class price of $495. Students get a 150-page Maine Guide handbook, 500-question practice tests, and map-and-compass study materials. The school is VA-approved, so veterans can use GI Bill education benefits. MOLC has worked alongside Fins & Furs Adventures for 29 years of guide training. MDI Community Sailing Center is a nonprofit sailing center on Clark Point Road in Southwest Harbor. It is celebrating 30 years of getting people of all ages onto the water since 1996. The center offers maritime education and sailing instruction to residents and visitors of Mount Desert Island and nearby coastal communities, using a fleet of more than 40 boats. Senior staff are certified to at least US Sailing Level One. Junior programs run nine weeks of summer sailing camp, from recreational to competitive levels. Adults can choose from the Monday Women's Sailing Club, co-ed beginner evenings, private lessons, and a boat usage membership that gives qualified sailors independent time under sail. Volunteers and donors help keep programs accessible as the center looks toward its next 30 years.

Medomak Family Camp

Medomak Family Camp is an all-inclusive overnight camp for families in Washington, set on a lake in Maine's midcoast region. The property opened in 1904 as a farm camp for boys and was reimagined as a family camp in 1994 by owner Holly Stone. Families of all ages, from young children to grandparents, stay for week-long sessions and take part in activities such as sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, lake swimming, fishing, and archery. Weekly 2026 rates run from about 1,490 to 1,750 dollars per person and cover meals, lodging, activities, and equipment. The same organization also runs a separate traditional overnight camp for children.

Megunticook Trail Festival

Megunticook Trail Festival holds three trail races where the mountains meet the sea. These are the only races held inside Camden Hills State Park, and the 2026 event is September 12. The Wicked Tough 10 is a 10K with 1,600 feet of elevation gain on steep singletrack. The Halfast 20K is a gravel-trail introduction to trail racing. The Megunticook 50 is a 50K that crosses more than 90% of the park's trails, with views from Mount Megunticook over Penobscot Bay; at 1,385 feet, it is the second-highest peak on the Atlantic Coast. Entries are limited, the races carry UTMB Index recognition, and a Racecation guide helps traveling runners. The festival acknowledges it runs on unceded Wabanaki lands. It invites all Indigenous people to run free of charge and gives registrants the option to donate to Niweskok, a Wabanaki-led food sovereignty organization in the Penobscot Bay region.

Mi'kmaq Nation

The Mi'kmaq Nation is a federally recognized sovereign tribal nation headquartered in Presque Isle, with more than 1,500 members. Most members live in Aroostook County. The Nation was federally recognized in 1991 as the Aroostook Band of Micmacs, and formally adopted the name Mi'kmaq Nation in 2021. It is governed by a Tribal Chief, Vice Chief, and a nine-member council elected on staggered terms. The Nation's Administration and Education Center at 7 Northern Road houses departments from Cultural to Child and Family Services. In July 2026, the Nation celebrated the return of 3,400 acres of ancestral land near Bridgewater, the sixth completed project in the statewide Wabanaki land return effort. That effort is coordinated with First Light and the Wabanaki Commission on Land and Stewardship. The Nation is also a member of the Wabanaki Alliance.

Midcoast Conservancy protects land and water across 24 towns in Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo counties, focusing on the Damariscotta Lake, Medomak River, and Sheepscot River watersheds. The accredited land trust has conserved more than 15,000 acres and maintains over 85 miles of public trails. Its Hidden Valley Nature Center covers about 1,000 acres with 25 miles of trails for hiking, biking, paddling, and skiing. Three dam removals have opened 71 miles of river for migratory fish, and the group cleared invasive hydrilla from Damariscotta Lake. Members, volunteers, and a full events calendar support the work year-round.

Midcoast Conservancy Outdoor Gear Sale & Youth Ski Lease

Midcoast Conservancy, a land trust that runs Hidden Valley Nature Center, holds this two-day sale of secondhand mountain bikes, fat bikes, cross-country skis, and snowshoes. It also offers a youth ski lease, letting kids ages 3 to 17 lease skis for the winter season instead of buying new gear every year. It typically happens in late November. Midcoast Sports Exchange is a consignment store dedicated to "keeping gear in the game." It finds new homes for gently used outdoor gear, sporting equipment, and athletic attire, with some new items mixed in. The store is located at 141 Elm Street in Camden, on Route 1. Seasonal turnover keeps the racks fresh, from winter skis and skates to spring camping and fishing gear. The heart of the shop is its Play It Back program. It lets area athletic directors and coaches get equipment for student athletes whose families can't afford to buy new, recycling the community's gear back into its kids' seasons.

Millinocket Marathon and Half

Event

The Millinocket Marathon and Half is Maine's famous grassroots race, and one of the great feel-good stories in American running. Gary Allen founded it in 2015 as a self-timed "glorified flash mob" to help Millinocket after the Great Northern Paper mill closed. It now draws runners from all 50 states each December; the next edition is December 5, 2026.

Momentum Conservation supports land trusts and conservation groups across Maine, and was formerly the Southern Maine Conservation Collaborative. It works in three ways: a Land Trust Grant Fund that awarded $425,000 to 42 Maine land trusts in 2025, capacity building through training and technical help, and convening the field through events such as the Portland Sustainability Series. It strengthens the organizations that hold and steward land rather than holding land of its own. The office is in Portland.

Moosehead Lake Togue Derby

The Moosehead Lake Togue Derby is a winter weekend on Maine's largest lake. It celebrates the ice fishing tradition of the Moosehead region each winter; the 18th annual derby ran January 31 to February 2, 2025. Cash prizes go to the three largest togue, about $1,500, $500, and $250 in recent editions. Maine-raised NASCAR personality Ricky Craven hosts the event. Moosehead offers some of the Northeast's best hardwater fishing from first ice through early April, with togue (lake trout), brook trout, landlocked salmon, and cusk all in play. Derby weekend fills Greenville with anglers from across New England. This derby is different from the Greenville Fire Department's separate Moosehead Lake Ice Fishing Derby, held later in the season. The Moosehead Marathon and Half is a June race weekend through the heart of Greenville, along the shores of Moosehead Lake. It offers marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K distances; the next edition is Sunday, June 13, 2027. Its mission is to showcase the beauty, community, and spirit of the Moosehead Lake region while supporting local tourism. The Moosehead Marathon team has grown the event into a small year-round series: Moose on the Run, a 5K/10K, runs October 10, 2026, and the Mile Light Ice Run takes place each March. Volunteer roles and local lodging partners make the race a community affair, under the tagline "Lakes. Mountains. Marathon."

Moosehead Regional Land Trust works to conserve and protect the headwaters of the Kennebec and Penobscot watersheds in the Moosehead Lake region. Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge

Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. It covers nearly 30,000 federally protected acres in northeastern coastal Maine, with rolling hills, ledge outcroppings, streams, lakes, bogs, and marshes. The refuge supports more than 225 bird species, along with endangered species and rare plants. Moosehorn is known nationally for its intensive study and management of the American woodcock, a reclusive forest shorebird that locals call the timberdoodle. A large portion of the refuge is designated wilderness. Visitors can explore by car, foot, bike, or horseback. Hiking trails reach remote corners of the refuge, and hunting and fishing are permitted under refuge regulations. The Edmunds Division holds several miles of rocky shoreline where tides swing up to 24 feet twice a day. Volunteers, summer interns, and a friends group all support the refuge's work.
